Introduction
Being an anthelmintic, Albendazole prevents the multiplication of worms in human body. It is an anti-worm medication used for treatment of infections caused by worms such as pork tapeworm and dog tapeworm. It easily dissolves in dimethylsulfoxide along with strong acids, and strong bases. It has a slight solubility with methanol, chloroform, ethyl acetate, and acetonitrile. It is insoluble in water.

Drug Indications
Albenza tablets are indicated for the treatment of parenchymal neurocysticercosis due to active lesions caused by larval forms of the pork tapeworm. It is also indicated for the treatment of cystic hydatid disease of the liver, lung, and peritoneum which are caused by the larval form of the dog tapeworm.
How It Works
Albendazole works by checking the multiplicity of lesions which are caused by the larval forms of the pork tapeworm. Studies have revealed that patients with lesions of this type demonstrate a 74% to 88% reduction in number of cysts.
Dosage & Administration
Because dosages of Albenza tablets may vary from individual to individual, you should take this medication exactly as it has been prescribed for you by your doctor. It should not be taken in large amounts nor should it be continued for a longer time than recommended by your doctor. You may also follow the instruction manual that comes printed on the medicine.
You can take it after food with a glass of water. Small children can chew the tablets and drink a glass of water and swallow. Patients who are under treatment for neurocysticercosis should be provided with appropriate steroid and anticonvulsant therapy as required.
Side Effects
The side effects of albendazole differ between hydatid disease and neurocysticercosis. But the symptom of side effects of this medication is very mild which is easily resolved without treatment.
The allergic reaction symptoms like hives, difficulty in breathing, swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat may be possible side effects of Albenza tablets. If you experience easy bruising or bleeding, unusual weakness, a fever with sore throat, and headache with a severe blistering, peeling, and red skin rash, or a fever with chills and body aches, or flu-like symptoms then immediately call for the assistance of your doctor.
Symptoms of stomach pain, nausea, vomiting, headache, dizziness or temporary hair loss may be less serious side effects of this drug.
Missed Dose
If you miss a dose and are recalled of it later on, then you can take the missed dose the moment you are recalled of, if it’s not almost same time for you for the next dose. But if it is otherwise, then skip your dose and resume to normal schedule but never take two doses at one time.
Overdose
Because symptoms of overdose of Albendazole have not yet been known, if you feel any kind of uneasiness, considering it as a possible outcome of overdose, you should seek immediate medical attention.
