Generic Name: Rosiglitazone Maleate

Use
Some people who have Type 2 diabetes have a condition called insulin resistance. Although the pancreas produces insulin, the body?s cells cannot use it effectively, and the sugar (sometimes called glucose) stays in the blood. Over time, blood sugar levels rise, and type 2 diabetes develops. Avandia works to overcome this insulin resistance by making the body?s cells more sensitive to insulin.

Dosage
Take Avandia once a day or twice a day as prescibed by your doctor. It can be taken with or without meals. Food does not affect how this medication works.

Side effects
In clinical studies, Avandia?s side effects included cold-like symptoms and headaches. Tiredness, weight gain and swelling also occurred.

Precautions
Avandia should not be used in the treatment of Type 1 diabetes or for the treatment of diabetic ketoacidosis. Taking Avandia in conjuction with insulin may increase the risk of serious heart problems. Talk to your doctor about this. Let your doctor know if you have a history of heart failure, edema, liver disease, or experience unexplained tiredness, stomach problems, dark urine, or yellowing of skin while taking Avandia. Avandia may cause post menopausal women to start ovulating again resulting in pregnancy, please notify your doctor of any menstrual changes.
