Introduction
Carrying the brand name Cardura, Doxazosin mesylate tablets are available on prescription for the treatment of patients suffering from benign prostatic hyperplasia. BPH is a condition in which the flow of urine from the bladder is blocked due to the extra growth of the prostate gland which presses on the urethra. It is also used for the treatment of blood pressure. Mechanism of Action
Doxazosin mesylate works by antagonizing the pressor effects of phenylephrine and the systolic pressor effect of norepinephrine. It reduces the systemic vascular resistance and results changes in cardiac output. Having a great effect on blood pressure and heart rate, it results in maximum reduction in systemic vascular resistance.
Dosage & Administration
The dosage of generic Cardura varies from person to person. The best dosage can be advised by your doctor who while evaluating the best dosage for you will keep in view your medical history as well as your present health condition.
But the usual dosage for patients suffering from benign prostatic hyperplasia is 4 mg to 8 mg per day and it depends on the patient's urodynamics and BPH symptomatology. It should be started with an initial dosage of 1 mg per day and may be increased as per the requirement to the maximum limit of 8mg per day. The increments should be made at intervals of two weeks.
Basing on the patient's standing blood pressure response, the initial dosage for patients suffering from hypertension is 1mg per day. A gradual increase in doses may be done, if required. But the single day dose should not be more than 16 mg.
Side Effects
The consumption of generic Cardura tablets may lead to side effects like dizziness, lightheadedness, drowsiness, nasal congestion, weakness and tiredness. These symptoms may disappear without requiring any treatment.
