Introduction
Catapres® (clonidine hydrochloride) is a centrally acting alpha-agonist hypotensive agent. The inactive ingredients in this drug include colloidal silicon dioxide, dibasic calcium phosphate, corn starch, FD&C Yellow No. 6, glycerin, gelatin, lactose, and magnesium stearate. Clonidine hydrochloride is an imidazoline derivative and survives as a mesomeric element.
Indication
Clonidine is used for the treatment of hypertension (high blood pressure). It is sometimes used in conjunction with other blood pressure drugs. It lowers blood pressure. It reduces the levels of certain chemicals in your blood.
Dosage and Administration
The dose of Catapres® tablets will vary based on the patient's individual blood pressure response. The initial dose for adults is 0.1 mg tablet twice daily (morning and bedtime).
The dosage can be increased by 0.1 mg per day at weekly intervals if necessary until the desired response is achieved. The maximum dose for daily dose is 2.4 mg.
In patients with renal impairment, dosage can be determined depending on the degree of impairment. They should be cautiously monitored.
Side Effects
Side effects are exceptional. If you grow any or change in intensity, notify your doctor immediate possible. Some adverse effects that can be considered are pale skin; confusion, hallucinations; fever; less urinating; fast or pounding heartbeats; swelling, rapid weight gain; feeling dizzy; or nervous; drowsy; slow heart rate etc.

Other medications that you should avoid while using it are: clonidine transdermal skin patches (Catapres TTS); digitalis (Lanoxin, digoxin, Lanoxicaps); an antidepressant for example amitriptyline (Elavil, Etrafon); a beta-blocker such as atenolol (Tenormin), labetalol (Normodyne, Trandate), carvedilol (Coreg), metoprolol (Lopressor, Toprol), propranolol (Inderal, InnoPran), nadolol (Corgard), sotalol (Betapace), and a calcium channel blocker or any other drugs to treat high blood pressure or heart problems.
It is vital to inform doctor before you take clonidine about your medical conditions such as a heart rhythm disorder, heart disease, kidney disease or severe coronary artery disease, or an allergic reaction to a clonidine transdermal skin patch (Catapres TTS) or a history of heart attack or stroke.

This drug should not be used in patients with Very slow heart rate and heart block, children and rare hereditary problems of galactose intolerance, the Lapp lactase deficiency or glucose-galactose malabsorption (Catapres tablets contain lactose).
This medicine should not be used in patients having allergic to one or any of its ingredients, pregnant or breast-feeding women.
