Introduction

Catapres® (clonidine hydrochloride) is a centrally acting alpha-agonist hypotensive agent. The inactive ingredients in this drug include colloidal silicon dioxide, dibasic calcium phosphate, corn starch, FD&C Yellow No. 6, glycerin, gelatin, lactose, and magnesium stearate. Clonidine hydrochloride is an imidazoline derivative and survives as a mesomeric element.

Indication

Clonidine is used for the treatment of hypertension (high blood pressure). It is sometimes used in conjunction with other blood pressure drugs. It lowers blood pressure. It reduces the levels of certain chemicals in your blood.

Dosage and Administration

The dosage can be increased by 0.1 mg per day at weekly intervals if necessary until the desired response is achieved. The maximum dose for daily dose is 2.4 mg.

In patients with renal impairment, dosage can be determined depending on the degree of impairment. They should be cautiously monitored.

Side Effects

Precautions

This drug should not be used in patients with Very slow heart rate and heart block, children and rare hereditary problems of galactose intolerance, the Lapp lactase deficiency or glucose-galactose malabsorption (Catapres tablets contain lactose).

This medicine should not be used in patients having allergic to one or any of its ingredients, pregnant or breast-feeding women.
