Introduction
Mometasone furoate lotion is a cortisone-like steroid available under the brand name of Elocon and is used to treat certain itchy rashes and other inflammatory skin conditions. The topical lotion is composed of Mometasone furoate and USP for dermatologic use. Accompanied with anti-inflammatory activity, Mometasone furoate is a synthetic corticosteroid with the empirical formula of C27H30CI2O6 and a molecular weight of 521.4. It is a white to off-white powder. It is slightly soluble in octanol and moderately soluble in ethyl alcohol and insoluble in water.
Mode of Action
Having anti-inflammatory, antipruritic, and vasoconstrictive properties, Mometasone furoate lotion induces phospholipase A2 inhibitory proteins which are collectively known as lipocortins. By inhibiting the release of precursor arachidonic acid which is released from membrane phospholipids by phospholipase A2, these lipocortins control the biosynthesis of potent mediators of inflammation.
Drug Indications
Being a medium potency corticosteroid, Elocon Lotion is indicated for the relief of the inflammatory and pruritic manifestations of corticosteroid- responsive dermatoses. Its usage for children below12 years of age is not recommended.
Dosage & Administration
Elocon lotion should be used daily once. In severe cases, it may be used twice only on instruction from your doctor. Take a few drops of the lotion and apply to the affected area. Lightly massage it until it disappears into the skin. It is supplied with a bottle with nozzle for most effective and economical use.
Like other corticosteroids, you should continue with the therapy till control is achieved. Reassessment of diagnosis may be required if no improvement is seen within 2 weeks. Because it is not advisable to use this lotion with occlusive dressings, so it should not be applied to diaper area if the patient requires diapers or plastic pants.
While using this lotion one should be careful enough to not to let it into the eyes. It should not be used for a longer time than prescribed because there is a possibility of it disrupting your ability to make your own natural adrenal corticoid hormones which are secreted by the outer layer of the adrenal gland.
If a Dose is Missed
You can apply the lotion if it is not too late to near the time of your next dose, otherwise you can skip the missed one. But never take two doses at a time.
Drug Overdose
The symptoms of Cushing's syndrome may develop as a result of overdose of the Generic Elocon. Acne, depression, excessive hair growth, high blood pressure, humped upper back, insomnia, moon-faced appearance, muscle weakness, obese trunk, paranoia, stretch marks, stunted growth (in children), susceptibility to bruising, fractures, and infections, wasted limbs are all symptoms of Cushing's syndrome and should be reported immediately to your doctor.
Special Warnings about Elocon
Elocon has been intended for external use only, so avoid its getting into your eyes. It should not be used to treat anything else than the condition for which it was prescribed. If your skin experiences any kind of irritation or any kind of skin infection then your doctor should be immediately called upon.
The lotion should not be used on your face, underarms, or groin area unless it so directed by your doctor. If no improvement is seen in 2 weeks, then you should consult your doctor.
