Drug Indications
Famvir is a drug prescribed for the treatment of herpes zoster, commonly known as "shingles," in adults. The symptoms include a painful rash with raised and red pimples on the body, typically the back. People who had suffered from chickenpox in the past usually experience shingles. This drug also treats genital herpes and to avoid future flare-ups. In HIV infected people, this drug is used to treat for both genital and oral herpes.
Drug Contraindications
This drug should not be administered to patients <18 years of age. It also may not be applied in patients with ophthalmic zoster. The safety has not been studied in immune-compromised patients except for the treatment of recurrent orolabial or genital herpes in HIV-infected patients.
An Important Note
Famvir is beneficial if used within the first 48 hours after shingles first emerges; treatment needs to be started at the first sign or symptom of genital herpes. It may not help if the treatment is delayed over 72 hours after the herpes zoster rash first appears or more than 6 hours after genital herpes appears.
Dosage
To treat herpes zoster in adults, dose of 500 milligrams every 8 hours for 7 days is recommended. In recurrent genital herpes treatment, adults can take 125 milligrams twice a day for 5 days. For recurrent genital herpes prevention, the common dose is 250 milligrams twice a day for up to one year. To treat recurrent oral or genital herpes in HIV-infected individuals, dose of 500 milligrams twice a day for 7 days has been approved. People with damaged kidneys need a smaller dose.
Administration
It is essential to take Famvir for the full course, even if you feel better. You should not take it more often or for a longer time than your doctor directs. It may be taken with meals or in between.

The doctor will suggest whether you should continue it or stop it. Some of the side effects may include: constipation, dizziness, diarrhea, fatigue, fever, nausea, headache, and vomiting.

Famvir doesn't treat herpes infection of the eye, herpes infections throughout the body, or the first genital herpes infection a person experiences (although it is approved for subsequent outbreaks). Also, it should not be applied to treat shingles in HIV infected people or with other immune system problems.
