Dosage & Administration
The Keflex tablet come for oral administration and can be taken in by mouth. The dosages vary from person to person. So, only your doctor can prescribe the best suited dosage for you. Normal dosages are different for adults and pediatrics.
The normal dosage of Cephalexin is 250 mg at every 6 hours. For the patients suffering from streptococcal pharyngitis, skin and skin structure infections, and uncomplicated cystitis may be administered a dosage of 500 mg at every 12 hours. And the medication should be continued for 7 to 14 days.
For pediatric patients, the normal daily dosage range from25 to 50 mg/kg per body weight and should be given in divided doses. There should be an interval of 12 hours between two doses. The dosage may be doubled only in cases of severe infections.
Likely Side Effects
The possible side effects of Keflex tablets which are associated with gastrointestinal system are diarrhea dyspepsia, gastritis, and abdominal pain. In some cases allergic reactions in the form of rash, urticaria, angioedema, and, rarely, erythema multiforme, Stevens-Johnson syndrome, or toxic epidermal necrolysis have been observed, which disappear without any treatment. Other side effects of cephalexin may include genital and anal pruritus, genital moniliasis, vaginitis and vaginal discharge, dizziness, fatigue, headache, agitation, confusion, hallucinations, arthralgia, arthritis, and joint disorder. Immediate medical help should be sought if any of the above stated symptoms persist.
Drug Interactions
Keflex tablet is interactive with metformin and probenecid. There are possibilities of adverse effects by co-administration of cephalexin and metformin as they inhibit the tubular secretion through organic cationic transporter systems. Probenecid inhibits the renal excretion of cephalexin. So an adjustment in dosage of these drugs may be required.
