Active ingredient: Tibolone


Tibolone is used for the treatment of menopausal symptoms prevention of osteoporosis in post menopausal women & menopausal symptoms such as hot flushes and night sweats.

Drug description

When a womans natural oestrogen levels fall at the time of the menopause, she is likely to experience menopausal symptoms such as hot flushes and night sweats. Taking HRT can ease unpleasant symptoms and is a medication used to prevent osteoporosis in those at high risk, as well as a treatment for women with osteoporosis.Tibolone is a steroid compound that combines oestrogenic, progestogenic and androgenic properties that mimic the action of the sex hormones. Tibolone does not stimulate the womb lining and if started at least one year after a womans last normal period, should not cause regular period like bleeding. It may, however, cause some spotting or light bleeding in the early weeks of treatment. Tibolone is licensed for the treatment of menopausal symptoms e.g. hot flushes and also for decreased libido at this time. Since March 1997, it has been licensed to be used in the prevention of osteoporosis in post menopausal women. Since tibolone does not stimulate endometrial tissue at any site, it is particularly useful in patients with a past history of endometriosis.

Side Effects:

Tibolone is not prescribed in cases where there is a hormone dependant tumour e.g. breast cancer, a history of heart attacks and strokes, liver disorders, vaginal bleeding where the cause is not known, or in pregnancy and breast feeding. Special care needs to be taken with patients who have kidney disease, epilepsy, migraine, diabetes or high cholesterol levels.Tibolone can interact with some other drugs, including anti-coagulants and certain anti TB and anti-epileptic drugs. Most users experience no problems when taking tibolone but it does have mild androgenic properties that may cause greasy skin or extra hair growth. Breast tenderness, a common adverse effect of conventional HRT therapy is rare with tibolone.
