Drug Indications

This medicine also prevents stomach ulcers in patients using nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medicines (NSAIDs), for example ibuprofen.
Drug Contraindications
Nexium should not be administered to patients with known hypersensitivity to any constituent of the formulation or to alternative benzimidazoles.
Dosage
GERD and Erosive Esophagitis
Take the drug once a day, at least one hour before a meal.
For patients having gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) symptoms, a 20 mg of Nexium has been approved once a day for four to eight weeks. If it is severe enough which may lead to esophageal erosions, the usual dose is 20 to 40 mg once daily for four to eight weeks. The dose should be followed by 20 mg once daily.
For GERD and erosive esophagitis in children ages 12 to 17, the suggested dose is same as elder patients. Children age 1 to 11 years old, can take 10 mg once daily for up to eight weeks.
Stomach Ulcer Prevention
In stomach ulcer (gastric ulcer) associated with nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), patient can take initial dose of 20 mg or 40 mg once a day for up to 6 months.
H. Pylori Treatment
In Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) patient needs to take two other drugs besides Nexium. He can take amoxicillin 1,000 mg (twice daily), Nexium 40 mg once a day, and clarithromycin 500 mg (twice daily) for ten days.
Pathological Hypersecretory Conditions
Patients with pathological hypersecretory conditions can take 40 mg twice daily.
Mode of Action
