Introduction:
Generic Ovral-L is an oral contraceptive. This medicine contains two types of female hormones, an estrogen and a progestin that prevents ovulation and pregnancy. They lead to the cervical mucous to solidify which makes it difficult for sperm to move toward the uterus, and they thwart the connection of an egg to the uterus.
Dosage and Administration
This first pill should be taken on the first Sunday after your period begins (unless otherwise told by your physician).
The recommended dose is one pill every day, no more than 24 hours after your last dose. Take it at the same time always.
Take the pill at night to decrease possibility of any nausea or headache.
If you are on a 28-day cycle, you should have one pill every day. The 28-day cycle holds seven pills. Take these pills to continue your regular cycle. Take while you are in menstruation.
If you are on a 21-day cycle, you need to take one pill every day for 21 days, and then abstain from taking any pills for 7 days. Ensure your period during the 7 days with no pills. Start again your pills on the 8th day with a new package.
Over Dosage:
If you have taken excess dose, contact a poison control center or emergency room at once.
Miss Dose
If you happen to miss one dose, take it the moment you memorize or take two pills at the next scheduled time. And use a second method of birth control such as a condom for at least seven following days to prevent pregnancy. If you miss three tablets in a row, start a new package on the 7th day of taking your last pill.
Precaution before Taking Generic Ovral-L
The patient must inform his doctor about all the medical conditions especially the following: liver, endometrial, breast, cervical, ovarian, or uterine cancer, abnormal vaginal bleedin, diabetes, blood vessel disease or blood clots, heart disease, tobacco smoker, recent heart attack, gallbladder disease, liver disease, high blood pressure, kidney disease, high cholesterol, stroke, migraine headaches, systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), allergic reaction to progestins, estrogens, other medicines, pregnant or wish to get pregnant and breast-feeding.
Precaution While Using Ovral-L
Make a regular breast and pelvic exam and Pap smear while using this drug.
Use an added method of contraception.
Abstain from smoking while you are taking birth control pills.
This medicine can swell hands, fingers, or ankles. Contact your health care provider if you feel you are retaining fluid.
Keep away from being in the sun, put on protective clothing and use sunscreen. You should not use sun lamps or tanning beds/booths.
Side Effects
Use of this Ethinyl Estradiol may cause many side effects. Report to your health care provider as soon as possible if you experience side effects such as: yellowing of the eyes or skin, vomiting, weakness or numbness in the arms or legs, especially on one side of the body, speech problems, tenderness in the upper abdomen, chest pain, vaginal infection like irritation, itching, or unusual discharge, severe or sudden headaches, coughing up blood, dizziness or fainting spells, headaches or migraines.
Drug Interaction
A number of drugs may interact with Ovral-L if taken together. A few of these drugs are antibiotics or medicines for infections, acetaminophen, aprepitant, atorvastatin, barbiturate medicines, bosentan, ascorbic acid (vitamin C), carbamazepine, clofibrate, cyclosporine, caffeine, dantrolene, felbamate, grapefruit juice, doxercalciferol, hydrocortisone, medicines for diabetes, diazepam or temazepam, mineral oil, nefazodone, modafinil, mycophenolate, phenytoin and oxcarbazepine.
Storage
Store Ovral-L at room temperature between 15 and 30 degrees C (59 and 86 degrees F).
