Introduction

Belonging to the piperazino-azepine group of compounds, Mirtazapine is an antidepressant affecting the chemicals in the brain which are responsible for causing depression if unbalanced. It is used for giving treatment to the patients suffering from major depressive disorders. It has an extensive metabolizing ability as well as an absolute bioavailability of about 50%. It is excreted predominantly through urine (75%) and 15% in feces.

Administration

Mirtazapine is a crystalline powder in white to creamy white color having a low solubility with water. In US, this drug comes under the brand name of Remeron. These Remeron tablets have been designed to be taken by mouth. Water is not needed as the tablets get melted the moment they are put in mouth. Be careful enough not to swallow or chew the tablet.

Dosage

As usual as with any other medicine, the dosage of this medicine is to be decided by your physician only. Yet the normal dosage is 15-45 mg per day. The starting dose should be of 15mg per day. After a weeks time, if any remarkable change is not observed then the dosage can be increased. But the increment in the dosage should be gradual and at intervals of one week. But at no cost, the dosage of Mirtazapine should exceed 45mg in a day of 24 hours.

Missed Dose

You can take the missed dose the moment you are recalled of it. But if you recall your missed dose nearly at the time of your next dose, then you better skip your missed dose and resume with your regular drug routine. Don’t take double dose.

Overdose

Symptoms like confusion, memory problems, drowsiness, and fast heart rate may appear as effects of overdose. In cases like this, you must talk to your doctor to avoid serious health problems.

Side Effects

Some times allergic reactions like skin rash or hives, difficulty in breathing, swelling of face, lips, tongue, or throat have been observed as side effects of consumption of Mirtazapine.

Because Remeron tablets affect the chemicals in the brain, the probable side effects may be mood or behavior changes, anxiety, panic attacks, trouble sleeping, or feeling of impulsive, irritable, agitated, hostile, aggressive, restless, mental or physical hyperactive and more depressed feelings like to have thoughts about suicide or hurting oneself. What ever may be the side effects of this drug, immediate help from your doctor should be sought.

Precautions

Before taking Mirtazapine, you must ensure that you have developed no serious allergy to it. You must let your doctor know all about your health history along with the medicines which you are consuming and which you are supposed to consume along with Remeron tablets. You must clearly let your doctor know if you are pregnant or have plans to be, so that he may advice you the needful.

Interactions

Mirtazapine is interactive with cisapride, and thus it should not be taken with this drug. The Remeron tablets show fatal interaction with MAO inhibitors, so these also should be avoided. This drug mildly interacts with antihistamines. So, consulting your doctor before taking this drug is very much important.
