Drug Description
Revia Naltrexone is a synthetic congener of oxymorphone with no opioid agonist properties. This drug is used to improve the condition or treat alcoholism. This drug is marketed by the brand name Revia and Depade. Naltrexone is the active ingredient in these drugs. This drug is indicated for the treatment of opiate addiction. It should not be given to people currently using narcotics.
Dosage and Instruction
Use Naltrexone as instructed by your doctor. Go through the label on the drug for exact dosing instructions. Generic REVIA is taken with or without food. This drug should not be used until the naltrexone challenge test is negative. Before taking this medication, the patient must be free of substance abuse for 7 to 10 days.
Miss dose
If you miss a dose of Naltrexone and you are taking 1 dose daily, do not double the dose the next day to make up the missed dose. Continue your scheduled dose and check with your doctor.
Overdose:
If overdose is assumed, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately.
Side Effects
Some common side effects caused by this drugs are nervousness; nausea; increased energy; irritability; stomach pain/cramps; increased thirst; joint and muscle pain; sleeplessness; appetite loss; anxiety; chills; delayed ejaculation; constipation; diarrhea; drowsiness; dizziness; feeling down; low energy; vomiting. Seek advice from your doctor if any of these most common side effects continue or become worse.
This drug may also cause severe side effects such as, cramping; dark urine; severe allergic reactions; depression; abdominal or stomach pain; suicidal thoughts or behaviors; vomiting; unusual tiredness or weakness; white bowel movements; yellowing of the skin or eyes.
These side effects occur very rare. And there is no guarantee that patients will suffer all these side effects. It is only a general hypothesis.
Precautions
Before using this medication, tell your health care provider of all prescription and nonprescription, herbal drugs you may use. Your doctor must know about your medical history, such as, any alcohol or drug use, any allergies and liver disease. This tablet obstructs the effects of narcotics and heroin. But, large doses of heroin or narcotics can undo this chunk and may cause coma, serious injury, and even death. Pursue your doctor’s instructions accurately. This pill should be used only if considered compulsory during pregnancy. Ask your health care provider before you breast-feed.
Drug Interactions
A large number of drugs interact with naltrexone while taken together. These are disulfiram, cough medication, diarrhea medication, narcotic medication, thioridazine.
Other drugs also may have serious interaction with Naltrexone. A few names of such drugs are Lipitor (atorvastatin), Ambien (zolpidem), Lunesta (eszopiclone), Celexa (citalopram), Klonopin (clonazepam), Depakote (divalproex sodium), Lamictal (lamotrigine), Lidoderm (lidocaine topical), Nexium (esomeprazole) and Lexapro (escitalopram).
Contraindications
Revia Naltrexone should not be applied in people who have acute hepatitis or liver failure, acute opioid withdrawal, taking opioid analgesics, currently depending on opioids. This drug also should not be used in people who fail the naloxone challenge test or who shows positive urine screen for opioids, have a history of sensitivity to REVIA or any other elements of this drug.
