What is Seroquel?
Seroquel Quetiapine belongs to a group of antipsychotic drug. It influences certain receptors in the brain. It works by diminishing the action of dopamine and serotonin, two chemicals in the brain.
Indication
Quetiapine is used for the treatment of schizophrenia and bipolar disorder (manic depression) in adults and children. This drug is also used in conjunction with antidepressant drugs to treat major depressive disorder in adults.
Dosage
The usual dosage range for adults in schizophrenia is 300 to 400 milligrams a day, divided into two or three smaller doses. The lowest dose of this drug is 150 milligrams a day which can be increased to highest 750 milligrams per day. To treat bipolar mania, a standard dosage ranges from 400 to 800 milligrams a day for adults. Your doctor may increase the dosage gradually over 4 to 6 days. For adults a standard dose of 300 milligrams once a day at bedtime has been recommended to treat bipolar depression, which can be slowly increased over 4 days.
Patients having liver problems should start at 25 milligrams a day. The doctor will raise the dose as required to 50 milligrams a day depending on your body's reaction.
A lower dosage should be recommended in patients who are weak, elderly, or prone to low blood pressure reactions.
Over Dosage
If the drug is taken in excess, it will have serious consequences. If such occurs, seek medical help without delay.
Administration
Seroquel should be used as instructed by your doctor. Follow the label on the drug for exact dosing information. This drug needs to be taken with or without food. Before Using Seroquel
If this drug is used some medical conditions may cause problem. You should tell your physician if you a history of heart problems, blood vessel problems, stroke, dementia, alzheimer disease, or trouble swallowing, or you are very overweight, high blood cholesterol levels, or high or low blood pressure. This drug also should not be used if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding. You must inform your heath care provider about history of blood problems, liver problems, cataracts, thyroid problems, narrow-angle glaucoma, neuroleptic malignant syndrome (NMS), seizures, high blood prolactin levels, or breast cancer.
Side Effects
Adverse effects with this drug are exceptional. It may give rise to abdominal pain, diminished movement, constipation, dizziness, dry mouth, drowsiness, excessive muscle tone, indigestion, headache, low blood pressure (especially upon standing), neck rigidity, nasal inflammation, rapid or irregular heartbeat, sleepiness, rash, tremor, weakness and uncontrollable movements.
Drug Interaction
Some drugs may interact with Quetiapine. The patient must notify his health care professional if he is taking any other drugs, particularly any of the following: HIV protease inhibitors, Barbiturates, alpha-blockers (eg, doxazosin) or medicine for high blood pressure, azole antifungals, fluvoxamine, macrolide antibiotics, or telithromycin, carbamazepine, phenytoin, corticosteroids (eg, prednisone), rifampin, or thioridazine, dopamine receptor agonists or levodopa.
Precaution
Seroquel may result in tardive dyskinesia, a condition showing uncontrollable muscle spasms and twitches in the body and face. This problem can be lasting, and is most common among older adults, particularly women.
Antidepressants may cause suicidal thinking and behavior in children and teenagers. So patients taking antidepressants should be observed closely for changes in moods or actions, especially when they first start treatment or when their dose is increased or decreased.
Contact the doctor right away if the patient develops hostility, anxiety, insomnia, restlessness, and thoughts about suicide or dying or impulsive or dangerous behavior. This drug is not permitted for use in pediatric patients.
Contraindication
Seroquel is contraindicated in patients who are allergic to any ingredient in Quetiapine or elderly patients with dementia (including Alzheimer's disease).
