Wellbutrin SR (bupropion hydrochloride) is an antidepressant of the aminoketone class. The active component of this drug is Bupropion hydrochloride, a white, crystalline powder extremely water-soluble. It produces the sensation of local anesthesia on the oral mucosa.
Wellbutrin SR Tablets are offered for oral administration as sustained-release tablets. The major inactive factors in this medicine include cysteine hydrochloride, carnauba wax, hypromellose, polysorbate 80, microcrystalline cellulose, magnesium stearate, polyethylene glycol, and titanium dioxide.
Swallow a WELLBUTRIN SR tablet whole. A dose of 300 mg/day has been recommended as the usual adult starting dose given as 150 mg twice daily. Initially the patient should take 150 mg/day as a single daily dose in the morning. If it is well tolerated, the dose can be given 150 mg twice daily, after day 4 of dosing. Patient should allow interval of at least 8 hours between following doses.
Patients who show no clinical improvement after several weeks of treatment at 300 mg/day can take a maximum dose of 400 mg/day, given as 200 mg twice daily.
Patients with impaired hepatic function should not take more than100 mg every day.
Indication
Wellbutrin tablets are recommended for the treatment of depression. This drug also has other uses not mentioned here.
Contraindication
Wellbutrin SR Tablets should not be used in some conditions. These are as follows:
Allergic reaction to any component in Wellbutrin SR Tablets, taking any other pills that has bupropion, past record of an eating disorder (eg, bulimia or anorexia) or seizures (eg, epilepsy). Besides, this drug also should not be started if you have suddenly stopped taking alcohol or sedatives (eg, benzodiazepines) after long-term use.
Drug Interaction
Patients taking this drug are warned not to use it with many other drugs since they may cause health hazards. Hence they can seek doctor's consultation before taking other drugs. A few such drugs are: antipsychotics, Amantadine, corticosteroids, efavirenz, cyclophosphamide, HIV protease inhibitors, levodopa, insulin, MAOIs (eg, phenelzine), oral hypoglycemics (eg, glipizide), nicotine patches, orphenadrine, sympathomimetics, theophylline, other antidepressants, thiotepa, or tiagabine, Carbamazepine, phenytoin, phenobarbital, or rifampin, beta-blockers, antiarrhythmics, phenothiazines.
Side Effects
Patient may undergo many adverse reactions by using this medication. But several people experience no, or very minor, adverse effects. They must seek medical help if any of these side effects continue or become troublesome:
dizziness; constipation; drowsiness; flushing; dry mouth; headache; increased urination; increased sweating; loss of appetite; nervousness; nausea; restlessness; stomach pain; trouble sleeping; taste changes; weakness; vomiting; weight changes. Other adverse reactions have also been reported. Inform your doctor if you feel any new reaction.
Precaution
Exercise caution while giving this drug to patients with hepatic impairment. Also patient of renal impairment need special care. They may need a reduced dose.
Before using this drug, patient must inform his doctor if he has diabetes, liver problems (eg, cirrhosis), kidney problems, high blood pressure, heart problems, or a recent heart attack, head injury, past record of seizures, or tumor in the brain or spinal cord.
